This large flagpole stands in the Plaza de Las Armas on the spot where the American flag was first raised following the capture of San Diego from its Mexican defenders in 1846 by a detachment of Marines and sailors who had sailed into San Diego Bay aboard the U.S.S Cyane. Tradition maintains that the pole was made from a ship�s main mast. ~ Old Town San Diego.
